Mx5 na VLSD question, more of a clarification

Post by na6*dori » Wed Mar 06, 2013 9:00 pm

i have been informed that the rear diff is unable to be serviced (oil service, not an overhaul)... this is due to another forum. now from what ive heard the only thing about the vlsd that is unservicable is that it cannot be split apart and overhauled.
He mentions about a silicone fluid between the clutches not being able to be changed.... as an intelligent guess the silicone he is talking of is the diff oil thats viscous lsd specific.
any ideas?
he wants a 2nd opinion as to...
- can you change the oil?,
- the silicone in the diff? is it the oil or what?
- and what gains would he have from changing the old crudd oil to a new oil in the diff?

Opinions would be great guys, i have tried explaining as much as i can to him but it got me nowhere

Not sure on the other parts but I recently changed the oil in my VLSD on my '91.

I know that the driveshaft (propshaft if my boss is snooping these forums) on the 1.6Ls can't be serviced (the universals anyway); unsure on the diff.

yea i have changed my own diff oil before and no issues, im guessing the silicone he speaks of is an additive in the oil from production to supplement the clutches in the viscous lsd.

As far as i know the viscous part of the diff is a sealed unit so its oil is kept separate from the gear oil in the diff which youve already serviced

This is correct, possibly the Viscous could be shimmed.

It really isn't a great matchup.

The VLSD would be more suited to a 4WD. They get a bad rep for being shit, when in fact, the LSD is great but just isnt well suited to an MX5. Honestly, I noticed noise reduction from servicing everything but couldnt tell you if it changed the performance at all
