Water logged MX5

Post by Enth » Thu Dec 27, 2012 4:22 pm

I have a little problem. Everytime I accelerate or decelerate I can hear water moving under me, it sounds like a small pool. If I park my car in a dry spot after a few hours there are drips of water under the sills on both sides!

Just wondering if this is a common problem and how to fix?

I recall reading something about the sills getting water in them.
Google has a heap of hits:

Just poke something up the drain holes in the sills (by the jack points)

Yea I done this and widened the holes a little with a small screw driver, so much water came out, I hope my sills aren't going to rust out in the near future.

You should also check the drains behind the seat belt towers...they can block too!

They will be blocked. Thats what usually causes water being in the sills...

Water gets in the sills when the roof drains are blocked.
Check behind the seats by the seatbelt rear mount and you will feel a tray. Check the tray drain holes are not blocked.Ive seen everything from a mp3 player to last years Mcdonalds in there.
Roof water runs around the rain rail and into this tray.
Run some water on the roof and then check the drain tubes under the car coming out through the floor just ahead of the rear wheels.
You may need to poke some wire up and wiggle around.
When you feel a rush of dirty water you will be fine.
There are 2 drain points under the sills, thin wire will clean those to.
