Have a mate that is looking to build some bolt in roll bars.
Price would be around $500 ($600 for chromoly)

Design would be based off of the Hard dog design or the GT3-4 point one from Black Bird

Just need to see what sort of interest there is

Seems very reasonable!
Although I'm really after the HD style.

Is it compatible with the NB glass rear window?

We'll be test fitting it on mine which has a hard top, no soft top in though. You are welcome to shoot past once we've got them made up (Pending interest/$$) and test fit it in an NB

So I emailed Hampton Downs about this need for a roll bar as it nothing is mentioned about it on their website - & it's a pretty big thing to miss out if we do need one!

Their answer:

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the email.
You are welcome to participate in a convertible, however you can’t carry
passengers without a MANS approved roll cage.

Those are Hamptons rules if you hire the track directly from them, if you are doing a Playday event you will need rollover protection. Email playday@playdayontrack.co.nz for info on their events

I'm surprised if you right, as I was very specific in my email to them:

Subject: Play day restrictions

Hi there, I'm keen on taking part in a Play Day but I have a convertible.
Are there any specific rules for open top cars? A roll bar or something?

I've had a look on your website and while I couldn't find anything (except
making sure my brake fluid is good etc) I wanted to make sure.

Cheers for your time.
Regards, Tom J.

No harm in sending playday and email, they are usually pretty quick in their replies, better to find out now, than spend $135, turn up there and they say that you can't run on the track.

I'd be surprised if playday told you that you didn't need roll over protection in an MX5, but you never know, I thought I was wrong once, but I mistaken.

Ok I've gone through the PlayDay website and they have IDENTICAL wording as the Hampton Downs website!

Not having a go at you Donovan but if these guys have different rules their not making them apparent.
They even mention mx5's in their FAQ's regarding what type of vehicles go to them...
http://www.playdayontrack.co.nz/faqs.html

However I'd hate to get there and be turned away so I'll email this PlayDay crowd too.

No worries, I am just going by what I keep on getting told, but mind you, I wouldn't want to take my car out on the track without roll over protection, I get nervous in my car with just the roll over bar, should really put in at least a half cage.

Yeah, it is a bit stink that they say about roll over protection for open tops and then not put it on their website.

Plus a convertible is still MUUUUCH safer than a motorbike and they let me ride around there on one

Playday on track is not Hampton downs though. They are totally separate organisations/companies.

In other words, Hampton downs itself doesn't have any requirements for rollbars, but companies that organise track days might. 'Playday' events are organised by a company that does require them.

Yeah, but a motor tends to slide away from you when you fall off it, and if I was going to have something land on me, I'd rather have a 200kg bike than a 1000kg car

You do have a point.. You do separate from a bike unless you're unlucky

I'd rather be surrounded by metal (i.e. in a car rather than on or off a motorbike) for the 90% of crashes that wouldn't involve a roll over :o

Ok i got a reply from Tony at PlayDay Events....

Short version, yep we need a roll bar if it didn't come from the factory with one (NC?).

Well at least I know 100% either way now.

Cheers Donovan for PlayDay email address, shame they couldn't just put this basic info on their website.

while im not knocking getting a bar made up, i think it is very important that the builder needs to understand the rather specific problems that a mx5 bar has to overcome.
like:
Getting the bar to fit around the hardtop latches and seatbelts.
having it fit without restricting seat travel.
getting the back stays to fit with the softop.
making it MSNZ legal.
no point having a cool new bar if your seatbelts wont retract and your hardtop wont clip on.
so far the hard dog and brown davis come the closest to fitting those criteria.
MSNZ havent made things any easier by mandating a 44mm main hoop now which gives us even lesss room to play with.

Well, who is keen on importing a few bars from the states via container? I'd be in.

Would we be able to order from different places and plan to send them all in the one container? Different people want different bars as above, Hard Dog, Brown Davis and those Blackbird Fabworx bars.
