Petrol Fumes

Post by Donovan » Tue Oct 09, 2012 8:24 pm

I am still getting petrol fumes in the cabin even though I am sure I have blocked/plugged up any possible point that it can come in,

Now I am thinking that there is something wrong somewhere (just for a change) after the conversion. There is a strong petrol in the boot when I open that up, and to be honest I wouldn't have a clue whether it is normal or not (I am guessing not) for an early NA to have this.

Any one got any comments on this.

The fuel pump has been replaced/upgraded to feed the best so now just wondering there is something to do with seal on top of the tank?

Definitely not normal. I thought the fuel tank was a sealed system though.

Have you removed your charcoal canister?

Charcol Canister? Is that the black canister in the engine bay, if so, man that is long gone, no room for that anymore. But that's a long way away from the boot.

Can't be completely sealed, isn't the fuel pump submerged into the tank?

Problem is that it is starting to get quite strong now, I can't sit in the car for more than 15 mins or so when it is sitting still without getting a headache.

Depending on the model of your car, the charcoal canister can cause it. Might pay to trace the hard lines that you block off and see if theyre venting somewhere like the boot, or if one of the venting lines has come loose?

I removed my charcoal canister ages ago and just looped the lines
I don't smell fuel in my cabin at all so unless you didn't loop the lines and disconnect the sensor attached to it then that shouldnt be the problem

Check the valve in the top of the tank that is normally connected to the charcoal cannister. If the hose has been removed it may be leaking a bit. When I removed the one from the TG I replaced it wih a blank aly plate and and new cork gasket and used Loctite 567 on all the screw threads. Petrol will find its way through unsealed screw threads even if you think they are tight.

petrol and lpg fumes are the most volitile around, below 7% wont ignite, above 70% is saturation wont ignite, all you need is a stray spark and boom, personally i would not drive the car untill i fixed it real fast . :(

Well the not driving it isn't a problem, It's usually 2 or 3 weeks off the road after a track day fixing all the things I broke on it

So poking around trying to find where the fumes are coming from, is it ok to have that line blocked off the way it is?

the vent for the tank is there for a reason.
petrol sloshing around in a tank creates vapour that needs to be released.
without it your tank is a sealed system that just keeps building pressure. Reconnect your vapour recovery canister and port it intto the inlet manifold.

Dont forget you have a breather pipe next to the filler pipe that allows the tank to breathe....so on a warm day when the petrol heats up & expands a little then fumes will naturally be noticeable.

Did you have your charcoal canister removed by the crowd that did most of your mods? if so they probably blocked it off.
Mine doesnt have the charcoal cannister anymore but is still vented at the the engine bay similar to how it was from factory.

Yes, the place that did the engine conversion removed the charcol canister and would have blocked that line.
