Rear clunking... are my outer CV joints stuffed?
Hi MX5 gurus and wonderful people.
I have a clunk-clunk-clunk noise when I'm in gear and turn a corner. It's more noticeable while cold. I jacked up the rear and put it in gear, and turned the wheel by hand forwards and backwards to see how much play there was (to be honest, I don't know how much is 'acceptable')
I'm assuming it's either my outer cv joints, or something funky is happening with my diff. I do have the car lowered on BC's, so I'm leaning towards CV's.
The car is a 89 NA6 with an open diff.
Also, if it is the CV joints, I saw this on trademe:

I asked him a question (the only question there...) and he asked me about the spline count. Anyone know how many splines on our crappy open diffs?
Thank you for the help as always

Yea had a similar problem with my car, knock when pulling away from intersections, when changing gears, & some times when getting on & off the throttle in the higher gears, even got it at a track day loading up in a corner.
So first i got the CV's checked, then i changed the sway bar links, then i rebuilt the rear callipers, checked the rear hubs for a second time, put in full energy suspension bush kit, got a second opinion on the CV's, rechecked the shims on the pads in the rear.................
REAR STRUT TOP HATS !!!!!
got them from the mount shop Penrose

I think the wubwubwub noise is more likely the wheel bearing isn't ithalberd wrote:What was wrong with the top hats? I don't know much about them but I do know my car makes a 'wubwubwub' sound when I throw her into a corner turning left. Maybe I should check mine out, but I don't know what I'm looking for in particular.

Well it seems my rear clunking could be the exhaust hitting the mounting turret for where the drivers side tow hook was bolted to.
Decided to give it a small shake & made the noise straight away.
Put some rubber dampening on & will confirm once i get it drivable.
