Started cutting up my spare front bumper to make an airdam today. I figured I've got no money and a grinder so this is a good start. A sheet of ABS plastic will come vertically down from it with a hole cut for the radiator. Have the maths written down for what size it needs to be... The rear bumper still isn't cut. Anyone in Auckland knows today is not the day for powertools + outside.
I'd love to do this for mine lol. Will need to wait till I find a bumper for free =P
I've got a spare bootlid that I'm working out the aero for at the moment though.

the courier dropped these off this morning.
basically a cheap set of 15"s that I will be restoring as a project.
Joel thinks they are SSR Mk2R and I think he is right, but as they don't have the SSR logo on them, they may be a cheap set of knock offs. One has a little kerb rash but they should look pretty good once given a repaint and polish. They should be a good project

this is a pic about 1min after the first application of paint stripper.... gotta love the industrial strength stuff.

I ended up getting them for $285
not exactly dirt cheap, but I have always like the look of 4 spoke wheels and rota zero plus's are over a grand for a new set and I shudder to think what a set of work equip 01's cost. Bearing in mind I am comparing 2nd hand and needing work vs brand new, I still considered them cheap enough to use as a project.

Yeah, not being able to see out of the passenger side mirror was the second thing that I didn't like about the MX5, so these are so I can see. (hopefully it works)
Ok...and I got them to try be a little bit different, can't lie about that.

I would use Polypropylene over ABS. ABS is in the Styrene family and although a lot stronger would still crack if hit by a flying stone. The ABS sheet wouldn't have any UV stabilisers in it either so it would go brittle over time... (Mind you...so would PP, but that would last a bit longer [I'm talking unpainted of course]).Snapfrozen wrote:This was the deal of the century - free.

Interesting. Can you point me to a specific product/dealer? I imagine the product is still very flexible and easy to cut etc? Will end up being painted at some stageGrowler wrote: I would use Polypropylene over ABS. ABS is in the Styrene family and although a lot stronger would still crack if hit by a flying stone. I don't know what part of the county you are in, but most plastic sheet suppliers will have it...Snapfrozen wrote:Interesting. Can you point me to a specific product/dealer? You'll struggle painting polyprop, pretty much the only way to colour it is with a vinyl wrap. It's the stuff 10 litre paint buckets are made from.Growler wrote:I don't know what part of the county you are in, but most plastic sheet suppliers will have it...Snapfrozen wrote:Interesting. If you can print on Polyprop, you can paint on polyprop. You just have to treat the surface before hand...NicF wrote:You'll struggle painting polyprop, pretty much the only way to colour it is with a vinyl wrap. Absolutely right. However, flame treating with a gas torch gives variable results, and not many home workshops have a corona discharge apparatus.

You could try Mulford Plastics in Penrose as a start. (http://www.mulfordplastics.com/)Snapfrozen wrote:Im in Auckland and not too concerned if I can buy it in black. Will give a few ring arounds this week a go
I used to extrude plastic sheet many years ago so could have got you a sheet. Unfortunately that company sold up and the gear sold to someone in Chch.
