Let me know what the price ends up being. Definately keen

you drive an MX5, anything that resembled a reputation has disappeared in favour of a fun car to drive

the bar DOES NOT require a cert as it behind the head and not "in the passenger compartment"
if you get a MSNZ log book for the bar then thats ok too.
The MSNZ log book process is not as hard as the cage builders make out it is and nowhere near as expensive as a (not required) LVVT cert.
The way to do it is....
a) for a road car not used in any motorsport just get one built and dont worry about any certs of any kind...you dont need one.
b) get a MSNZ bar built and log booked if you are going to compete.
to get a log book all you need is a clubsport licence and fill in the paperwork to apply for the logbook. you only need to get the yearly medical etc if you are going for a higher level race licence.
the difference in price between a MSNZ approved and non approved is about $150

Timmo wrote:Well just went and talked to SpeedFactor here in Tauranga (seem like a top-quality outfit)- They had made one a while ago but for an NA (so the rear stays would need to be brought forward to allow the glass rear window to fold) and it was a simple single hoop with diagonal brace.
As an estimate to fabricate the design I wanted, it was ~$1200 plus would need to be certed (either a LVVT or MANZ).....so looking near $2000....which is almost getting into 'screw it, I'll just buy a Honda S2000' territory when you start to factor performance potential and costs.
thats sounds expensive...they quoted me $750 for a logbooked bar 2 years ago.
go and see PF automotive. ok they arent the friendliest people but they do ok work.
also i have Lin's number somewhere who used to work at speedfactor. he now has a buisness at the mount....i'll post up his number when i find his card.
EDIT: its called CDM at 5 hocking st. 07 5725089
theres also this guy on Trademe

have a read through here and print out pics of what you want so the builder Doesnt have to do all the design work.

You'd never get that legal in NZ because of the door bars. Anything forward of the seats needs cert, and only way to get cert with cage is with homologation and authority card, and to get authority card it needs to be half cage without door bars, or full cage as far as im aware.
The guy building mine also advised under msnz rules the rear stays cant go back further than the rear axle line, which I wasnt aware of.

understandable about the door bars
those rear stays are mounted to the rear strut tower so would be fine as thats level with the rear axle?

Unless they've changed the rules you shouldn't have any problem getting an authority card with a half cage and door bars. That's how mine was for years.
