What'd you do to your car this week/weekend?

best thing about the FMLink is a good set of get-you-going defaults. Having to adjust idle/cold-start/EBC when the weather changes (Auckland, every day) was lame..  and the features/support for MS is better than for FMLink now.

First person I've heard who said not to buy a megasquirt (mind you I think all the people on miata turbo are a bunch of ********* and I only end up there for the classifieds).

The link is only tuned by a pro because most tuners in NZ only work with link
If there was someone well known that can tune a MS in NZ this would not be true the latest MS is only slightly less expensive than the link and just because its cheaper by a couple hundy doesnt mean its crap
If you look at all the miatas running high power overseas they all use MS they cant all be wrong
I got my MS 1 from Jared of TeamJelly in Tauranga - (the guy selling them on trademe) and ive had great service (ongoing)from him.
And i believe WideOpenThrottle took his car down to him to get Dyno'd and sounded happy with the result in his post about it.

Yep i did take my car to him and his service was outstanding even tho i bought the MS off Keith Jones.
It would be nice to have a MS tuner in AK as it would have made it a lot easier to tune.
I was hoping to learn about tuning as i went but found out i was in over my head a bit!

Ha yeah im the same, i have to keep asking Jared questions as im bloody useless with it.
I'll definitely be taking mine down to him for a fine tune on the dyno, a good excuse for a run to the Mount i guess.

where does jared do his dyno runs? does he have a dyno?
I might put slydit on for a check run and fine tune.

Exactly my point. Nobody here (atleast locally in Wellington) will tune a megasquirt... Would rather have someone like Andre at speedtech tune my car than some boff who thinks he's read enough total garbage on the internet to tune my car with a laptop in the passenegr seat. May as well do it once and do it right.

To follow up: I've always been told this rule: choose your tuner, and let them tell you what they can and will tune. You can't buy an ECU and just expect anyone with a dyno will be able to tune it.

He is in Mclaren Falls Rd and his tune consists of both dyno & road tune.

He only works from home just like other trusted people i know [my turbo contact as well].

I went to his place to pickup my MS as I was down that way, he spent about an hr running through how it works and set it all up for me plus gave me a cpl of different tunes that I could run when the SC gets installed.
Didn't charge me for it either, I just paid for the MS.
He also took me for a blat in his supercharged MX and gave me some good advice on how to do my own DIY install!
If someone is willing to spend their time helping a guy that's going to DIY an install of something that he sell's, that's good service!
Its obvious that i am not a mechanical person so he could have easily warned me off the whole thing and tried to get me to buy his kit but he never even suggested the idea. Not many people like that these days.

I don't like him cos he bought the white MX5 I was on my way to buy

I've spoken to him once or twice when I was originally planning my engine build and he was more than happy to help out. Theres no point spending 2k on an ECU if a $500 one can do the same thing IMO. Megasquirt is amazing for what it is, and I'd take it over a link/AEM (lol AEM) any day.

Why? ECU + Tune for under 1k, you can tune and diagnose yourself, the interface is easy to use, and you can even get a base map working yourself quite simply :)

i dont really agree with the "choose a tuner first" thing.
i took my car into dyno power and showed him the software and how it works. i had loaded some base maps in and we tuned the car....lets face it a fuel map is a fuel map and same with an ignition map if hes too thick to work around a few menu differences then i dont think he really understands tuning.

there are enough base maps and tuning guides on the megasquirt to get your car setup and ready for fine tuning on the dyno. i just dont see the value in the link and all the Farken expensive addons you have to get for it.

i know of a guy who fitted a link and the tune was average. the tuner didnt do a very good job and wasnt "interested" in a turbo mx5 and so the guy didnt really get his $3000 worth (JUST for the ecu+tune)
he could have got a megasquirt and fitted coil on plug setup and made more reliable power than the link....

To each, their own. I'd never run megasquirt personally because I wouldnt be confident tuning it myself and there's nobody locally who would tune it for me, and be able to guarantee their work on one. It's not about them being too thick to be able to find their way around a menu, it's more to do with, which ones do they actually support and can install and tune for me and supply some sort of guarantee with the work they do.

The problem with your mates one was obviously a shit tuner, which is why I say choose a tuner. You get what you pay for.... Wanna be cheap??? Dont expect miracles.
You can't blame the Link ECU for having a bad tune, thats just down to someone choosing the wrong tuner....like you've noted, a fuel map is a fuel map after all! The exact same thing wouldve happened if he'd put a megasquirt in...

If I was gonna spend all that money turbo'ing a car I'd want someone to professionally tune it to get 100% out of it. Rather than 85% thats 'good enough' because you've tuned it yourself....

so i took SLYDIT for a wof today... and it passed . :)
the guys that worked there were in to rotaries and drift cars so i guess the number plate helped. .

so to celebrate i drove it back to the workshop and began making this:
i just bought a sand blasting kit and new DA sander so its a good excuse to put them to use.
I am also going to price up getting them laser cut once i have nailed the design and measurements so stay tuned.
