Turns out the left rear brake had jammed, and thats what caused me to slide into the curb, and to have to drive with the steering crooked. Nothing is bent/damaged, except for my wheel, lol. Scary isn't it, how something can fail and cause you to lose it like that?halberd wrote:It all LOOKS sweet, but my steering wheel is WAY off what is used to be (still steers fine though?) and my handbrake is stiff as to pull. I think I might take it to a mechanic. Im thinking maybe my steering or my brakes are what caused me to lose it, because it's never slipped on me the way it did last night
What'd you do to your car this week/weekend?

Just changed the power steering belt as it was slipping a little, gave the engine bay a quick look over and noticed that
there was a crap load of slack in the throttle cable. Maybe it wasnt getting full throttle movement before
Free power
Also had a play with the shock settings on the coilovers and found the front drivers side was ~5 turns off soft while the rest
were on max soft
would probably explain the slight bouncing i was experiencing.

Great day at the Sports Car Club autocross at Ardmore. 4 tests, 2 runs on each. 2 laps per run on the 2 morning tests and 3 laps each in the afternoon.
The section of the runway used has a surface of very fine gravel which makes it a bit like driving on marbles, particularly on hard semi slicks. Good fun though. ''
Only 18 entries, no MX5s though.

Pics of the gauges!
I need to remake mine but I have lost the original files with the scans etc. So I'll have to start from scratch. Thinking I may in back to black....

Anyway I drove slydit to the workshop and gave it the full Monty steam clean.jobs to be done are refurb the clutch master and slave and get the discs machined. And my air horn compressor has stopped working which requires pulling the radiator out to get at it.

Found out I bent my rear left hub carrier ever so sightly, so I got a second hand one and I'll swap it over next week
I measured everything else on the subframe and it's alright, lucky I didn't crash harder.
Does anyone know anything about rebuilding brake calipers? My rear left one is jammed shut. Is it better to buy a new one or a rebuild kit? Reckon I can do it myself, with little mechanical knowledge?

I have rebuilt a few rear calipers. They are not difficult if you have the right tools and providing the bore and piston have not been damaged. If yours has seized then there may be the risk of damage.halberd wrote:Does anyone know anything about rebuilding brake calipers? My rear left one is jammed shut. The worst bit is doing the handbrake mechanism. You need a very thin circlip plier to get the circlip out at the bottom of the cylinder.
The rebuild kit comes with all the seals and a small tube of rubber grease however you may find you need a bit more depending on how generous you are with it.
There is a bit of info here (http://www.miata.net/garage/ebrake/index.html) and a search in the brakes and suspension secion of forum.miata.net should turn up more info.
Have fun.

Another thought, if you are thinking about painting your calipers, do it while you have them stripped down. You still have to mask them up but it is a lot easier without the handbrake mechanism and the rubber boots.
