So you going to sell up? Or sit on it for a bit until you realise you really do want to keep it?

I want to keep it, I really do...
By the beginning of next week I will have a definitive answer. I will be talking to the shope that I brought the lug nuts from as this is 1. A liability claim and 2. Bloody dangerous!

Chris, just being devil's advocate here, but did you have enough thread engagement between the studs and the lug nuts. If the wheel centres on your new wheels were thicker than standard then that is a serious risk. It is not easy to see from your photo of the wheels whether the lug nuts sleeve inside the wheel or whether they are just a tapered seat.

I brought new wheels for the car, and they needed new lug nuts, so I went to get some, got some and drove maybe 20 kms on them before the thread basically tore off

I asked the same thing.
Not being a dick, but until we know the answer, we can't give advice on who to blame or speak to

So they're flat or round? And the wheels are the same? What is the ID of the hole inside the lugs that locates around the hub?

What they're asking is did you have locating rings installed with the wheels? If the centre bore of the wheels is larger than the car's hub diameter then you need hub locating rings installed, or the weight on the wheel will be held by the wheel nuts and not the hub as it should be.
I'm assuming they're OG Sakura wheels, and a bit of Googling suggests their centre bore is something like 73mm. Considering the MX-5's hub diameter is some 54mm, that's almost a centimetre out around the side of the hub.
I'm reluctant to say it, but if the case is that you did not have locating rings installed, it's not the fault of the wheel nuts

Assuming your wheels don't match the car's hub diameter, it's not a fault with the wheel nuts, so pretty much.
Pretty rough lesson if that's the case
