Thanks for the advice:
I went to Autoway in Hamilton today and talked to Don. Very amiable and knowledgable in a well-organised workshop.
Gearbox completely normal.
He recommended Scott at Installers in Hamilton to sort out my defunct car alarm. Went round there, and got the thing going, with very full explanation of its complexities, at no charge!

These are good guys to do business with.
