Hi everyone, I've just bought my first MX5, wondered if anyone here had any info on my car as I didn't get any info apart from verbal with it.
Its a 1999 roadster, I was told it's am RS, it is dark metallic blue and it's registration is BWD 904, it has 117,000kms on the clock and i got it from the Auckland area, bought on trademe.
Loving it so far, would just like to know more about it.
Thanks.
Paula

Sounds nice ! Get some pics when you can, RS Roadsters usually have Torsens.
Any plans to track etc?

Open up the drives door, on the body above the latch there will be a white sticker which will have info on it, such as the body type, engine size etc. It will also have a field marked as Grade, if it is an RS it will say there.
RS comes with Torsen LSD, 6speed, Bilstien shocks, bracing on the rear end, front tower strut brace

Thanks for the quick response everyone. Bugger forgot to check door again today, hubby seems to think it's an RS judging from a few of the comments.
The dealer told us it had had the same owner since coming into country (9 years) just had a feeling the owner would have been on here.
I am just going to enjoy the car, loving it so far. Would love a hard top for it, are they like hens teeth?
Spent far too much time lurking round here, but found loads of helpful info.
The original Bose stereo CD player is not working, radio is ok but not CD, had that looked at today but looks like going to have to replace it, lot's of helpful info on that on here thanks.

Hard tops aren't rare, they're just darn expensive. You'll see 1 or 2 pop up on trademe once a fortnight.
You've got 2 options really.
1. Buy the first cheapest one you come across wherever it is, fix it and get it painted. $800-$1200 for the top, approx $200-$500 for fixing/painting depending on condition/colour
2. Wait for the right one, in good nick, in the right colour. $1500-$2000

Or buy an MX5 with a hardtop, take it off then sell it.
If you wait long enough and look in the right places you will find one for a good price.

Keep an eye on the usual places like trademe, sella and occasionally mx5mart. You will find one eventually

Honestly wouldn't buy one from MX5mart for 1 reason. I constantly saw him outbidding me on tops on Trademe. Wait long enough and you are bound to get one he misses

I really dont understand the need for a hardtop, come on guys you bought a convertible! Spend the money on a suspension upgrade or something.
Enjoy being able to have the top down all year round and it's not like it adds anything safety wise - the MX is a easy car to get into regardless, just make sure the soft top is covered with your insurance company and u'll have piece of mind and a cool car!
Unless your planning on taking your car on the track regularly Laupis...

I like the hardtop in winter. Warmer, quieter, dryer (until somehow I got the softop to stop leaking... Probably something to do with tightening the lever arm things) and more vision out the rear.
Don't get me wrong thought, I do love cruising on a sunny day with the top down

Closest I could get to a coupe, bouggt the car for the chassis not the roof.

I sold mine coz I found the noise level marginal, didn't seem warmer (wasn't insulated) and thanks to my superior DIY soft top fitment no leaks (dumb luck I think).
Yeah true a little less visibility, especially after my wife gave the rear window a wipe on my one month old soft top and scratched it....

I bought mine for track work, and same thing, bought it for the chassis, the fact it was a convertible was part of the package. Dont get me wrong, I like driving topless, but I just chance it and go out with no top and leave the hard top in the garage

Bought my car because it had 2 seats and I hated being a taxi. Even more convenient when you store stuff on the passenger seat

that and it was fun to drive

Hey Laupis sorry I kinda jacked your thread but this is interesting (2 me anyway) I've always been curious to other MX owners purchase motivation.
Just to add to the list; I always wanted a porsche356 (rwd convertible) but before I invested some serious $ and time into a kitCar I figured a MX5 would be the perfect ownership test vehicle...
Unfortunately the money I should be putting towards the 356 project is being spent on the MX coz I like it so much. Damm car gets its hooks in you!

Like a few others here, I bought mine because of the handling and it being lightweight, would have preferred a fastback if I could have got one over the convertible.

I don't plan on taking the car on the track. I just love the outline and shape of the car with the hard top on. Like someone said, I will probably have the roof off all summer anyway.
Paula.
