I just picked up a single axle unbraked car/flatbed trailer. I appreciate the fact that it is entirely unsuitable for towing cars on, although the guy i got it from has towed a lot of cars on it, and its very strong.
Basically its a general purpose trailer for me, and if i have to i can put a car/wreck/breakdown/scrapbody on for short distance careful towing. Def not planning on using it to travel across town with a car on. Might look at modifying to twin axle braked one day if i get around to it.

My guess is that the previous owner would have had no insurance if he had an accident while towing a car on an unbraked trailer. The average car/suv is rated to tow 750kg max unbraked (and some a good deal less!)

Wow, whereabouts in Auckland is this MX5 in the frost!?
Nice work ham, we see that F1 cars do not run licorice strips... for kaning it I simply cannot imagine low profiles on the road for my one.

Got a quote for a heavy duty exedy clutch today as i dont think the current one will be very happy after a skid pan day on the 21st.
Also think it needs a wheel alignment as a front wheel was skipping on full lock. Any recommendations for alignment settings?

Does it happen to be the left front by any chance as my one used to turn more to the left than to the right and the only way to get it close is to turn fully in the tie-rod on that side & out the drivers side by the same amount.
No amount of centering the rack cures it.And i will need a wheel alignment again to see if it can stay that way.

F1 tyres have no relation to road car tyres. The reason low profile tyres are preferred for the road is sidewall stiffness. Which F1 tyres have far more of even though they have smaller wheel sizes. That not withstanding, the improvement in lateral grip you get from running lower profile tyres on the road, can be offset by:harlansmart wrote:Nice work ham, we see that F1 cars do not run licorice strips... for kaning it I simply cannot imagine low profiles on the road for my one.ham wrote:Ditched the 17s and replaced with 15s. Losses in traction when braking/accelerating (the contact patch shape is altered).
Reductions in ride quality from less tyre spring effect, and
Worse handling or overall feel, from the increased inertia and unsprung weight that the wheel tyre combination has.
Just a matter of preference really! Most comparable race cars, such as V8s and such like run low profile tyres.

Dynofiend, cheers man really interesting, good points... I was talking to a resident guru and race car builder about this today (rim sizes and so on, alignment etc) and can say you beat me to modify my post a bit... he informed me that the current rim diameter is an inch (or even 2) greater than I had thought they were running in most classes, sizes have gone up it seems!

Yeah it seems to happen most when turning right on full lock.WideOpenThrottle wrote:siren676 wrote...Also think it needs a wheel alignment as a front wheel was skipping on full lock

Looks good Donovan. To get that many laps on the first run without any serious issues is good.
What brakes are you running and was there any damage caused? If you had to be told there was a problem I guess they hadn't faded too much from the heat.
Edit: Forget the question, just read the other thread.

Sorry Mate, I should have.
To be honest I forgot you were going to be there. By the time I got there, saw my old bike dmaged and on a trailer (already) and my mate who bought it off me sporting a suspected broken collar bone due to an over exuberant 125 rider and getting angry on his behalf then talking to Donovan and trying to persuade him to
1/ Ditch the horrible (too big) 17"s
2/ Not go to a bigger size brake again (I mean 6 pot 11.75"....come on!!
3/ Get the correct heat brake pads
4/ Run some ducting
5/ Get a real exhaust system
6/ Figure out how in hell I can build or afford to buy a v8 mx5
(THANKS Donovan for that!!)
7/ Watch some of the cool cars (did I mention I LOVE GT3's?) and try and figure out how in hell I can afford to buy or build one of those...
I got a bit overwhelmed...not to mention wishing I was out there in my own wee car...
Geez no wonder I had to go home for a sleep, I was thinking way too much!

I can let you borrow my battery reviver thing and it might bring your battery back to life if you find it's dead. Just leave it for a few days plugged into the wall and it might bring it back to life.siren676 wrote:Went to start it to go to work this morning only to find the battery flat because i'd left the passenger footwell light on.Will give it a jump when I get home tonight.
In better news my new wheel nuts arrived so I can finally fit my 15‘s
