Wouldnt it be cheaper just to have the van stolen?SLYDIT wrote:OK so get a call from the mechanic today...
one of the boys dropped thier van in for a service and the mechanics managed to lock themselves out of the van because the alarm locked the doors again.

I had initially though the Dynatron 7800 self arm feature was quite cool, not so sure now though, I'd be continually locking myself out no doubt
Well mine's going in tomorrow for it's upgrade and I've been given quite a few tips to request the installer do (cheers 2low2c and others) including making sure I take home all of the factory manuals etc and paperwork along with all of the systems original packaging, does anyone have any other hints?
I've offered to remove the plastic throughout, so I hope not to face Fleurs dilemma and I have made it clear I'm expecting a high standard (after-all we can get these alarms for about 1/2 the installed price and if I wanted a amateur job I'd do it myself and save $300).
So any more suggestions people

Agreed, a 'well hidden kill switch' is a great idea no question there but a decent alarm can do a bit more than this in addition too... what use there is in fitting central locking to a Miata in terms of security?
FWIW: Vader got dropped off yesterday morning and the guys doing the job have far been awesome, they've keep me updated and managed to do all I've asked (again thanks to 2low2c for more final adjustments requested) ~ I had a pretty long list of demands and found other (lesser?) outfits baulked at some of my requests – well the car should be finished tonight so upon collection I'll be able to evaluate the quality of the work and once its all back together and tested I think I'll be able to recommend the installer if anyones interested, they've been really great.
I tested the waters and visited 3 well known installers with the car (all representing well known and different brands) - while they were all about the same price (+/- $200) and could all offer slightly different features the outfit chosen was more flexible and understanding of my needs (i.e. 'wants').

Ross's tip from MX5mart. Don't install central locking. Just don't lock your car. Take your radio faceplate off, open your glove box so would be thieves can clearly see there is nothing to take.
Set your alarm, naughty boy/girl tries door - alarm goes off, hopefully they run away.
If alarm set and car locked it increases the chances of a screw driver in your door lock, stuffing it or your hood being slashed ($1000 excess).
Better to give them easy access and let the alarm scream and do it's job.
Most of the time it's just losers after the radio or small change. If they are serious car thieves and want the car the locked doors and car alarm aren't going to stop them so at least this might help minimize the damage they do getting in. And saves you $220 getting central locking installed. Probably better to use that money getting the GPS tracking.
