How to spot an 1800 NA gearbox?

Post by WideOpenThrottle » Thu Apr 19, 2012 7:24 pm

How do you differenciate an 1800 box to a 1600 one?

Is there a number stamped on them or what?

Looking at maybe getting one while i have the chance while everything is out!

Cheers for knowing what i don't! :D

they are the same.
ive had 2 na6 boxes, and then the one that came with my na8 motor was identical. ive had one that was a 1.8 out of a newer car and when it got rebuilt the guy said it had a double synchro on second or something, but as far as im aware they are the same box

So... just the internals are stronger then?

Still it would be nice to identify one without a shadow of doubt!

Wouldn't like to think i bought a 1600 one when i have already got one!

NB ones are stronger than NA ones, but all NA ones are built equal

But they do vary by year don't they? In the shifter assembly?

It seems they really only vary in final ratio's-the 1600's are 4.3.1 while the 1800's are 4.1.1 plus an improved second gear synchroniser!

Not a stronger box as i had originally thought!

The small dustboot around the base of the gearstick is 60mm dia on the 1.8 and the 1.6 is 75mm.
Also a slightly different baseshape and the rubber boot is taller on the 1.8.

The 4.3:1 , 4.1:1 , 3.9:1 etc final drives, is the diff ratios. Nothing to do with the gearboxes.
