how to remove trim at base of roof/boot lid +New paint pics

Post by JasonZE » Sat Feb 11, 2012 3:21 pm

Hi, im about to start painting our mx5 and looking at what im going to remove and all looks easy apart from the hard plastic trim that runs around the base of the roof where it meets the boot lid panel.
I relly want to remove this as im changing colour and dont want masking lines.
Anyone know how its held on? glue, screw, clips??
Also anyone know a panel guy in CHCH that can help with filling the little dints as bogging is not my strong point! but painting im not to bad.

Cheers
Jason.........

to remove that molding you have to first remove the soft top and then it is bolted to the body remove the bolts and gently push the molding towards the inside of the car

Thanks

well after an hour of stripping the roof etc the moulding is stuck fast(only got the ends to move a little) so going to have to lift the rubber and mask under it its either that or destroy it getting it off!

The car is completely stripped and started the sanding so if weather is good painting on thursday/friday.
Got all the paint etc and that base coat/clear/thinners etc is damn expensive over $600 on a deal from the paint shop.
Will post some pics when all done.

Try a bit of heat gently with a hair dryer to soften it & work along from one edge as you go.

They have a mastic sealant under them so are a bit hard to get off, just work from one end slowly.
Its worth getting it off.
When you repaint your car do the windscreen surround black. I reckon it looks good as side windows and hood are black.done it to 6 cars.

took the day off and finished up the green and layed a few coats of clear down and off the gun im amazed how flat i got it I though i would be blocking out orange peel for a day or so!
Letting it harden for a day then clear the underside of boot/bonnet and inside of doors which are all painted just not cleared yet then assemble at the weekend and snap some finished pics,

Thanks guys Im happy with how its going so far.
To keep the dust down is hard I just swept and hosed the garage out between processes and have a couple of ol fans by the side door blowing some of the overspray out nothing fancy.
I use my gravity feed gun to paint it its only a basic gun i got a few years back for around $100 and borrowed a mates compressor.
I think using good quality (expensive as hell) products and not skipping any processes aong the way contributed to the good result.

Silly question but how do I remove the piece that the number plate sits in that's located above your 2 doors?

"Rear Garnish"

Remove the number plate
Remove the 2 screws under the plate
Remove the tail lights (4 nuts, 1 plug on each)
Remove 6? i think nuts that hold the garnish in from inside the boot

Done! (From memory heh)

easy to remove there are just 10mm head nuts holding it on then once you get it loose you will see there are 2 plastic clips that you can push out from inside the boot as you pull on it.

Looking gorgeous! I'm wanting to repaint my MX-5 and this isn't helping me resist the temptation to splash out on a basic gun.
