MX5 Gearbox Noise

Post by g64 » Mon Dec 12, 2011 9:04 pm

Who can I get to look at it in the Auckland area? Id prefer to take it to someone who specialises in MX5s, so if anyone knows someone, it would be great.

The sound is a meshing noise which occurs on deceleration, its worst in 4th, and bad in 3rd, but also does it in all other gears. It goes away when I push the clutch in. It also does it to a lesser extent when I'm accelerating.

It's going to drive me insane at this rate!

I have learnt to live with that noise
you will too
I think that noise was added by the mazda designers to make it sound more like an Elan or MG

Yep mine does it too. Though it seems to resonate through the PPF to the point I'm trying to remember to check the bolts are all torqued up properly!

Mine used to do it too until I replaced the diff/driveshaft with 1.8 gear. I think it's just caused by free play in the drive train and resonance.

And mine does it too although i think that if you reset the power point frame up to factory specs the noise may lesson to some degree as i have noticed while having mine in & out several times.
I also suspect bushings,aftermarket/lowered springs, worn engine/diff mounts, etc add to the noise.

Thanks heaps for the info guys. Its just driving me so insane, but now that I know its not serious, I feel a lot better about it. The thing that really gets me is when passengers ask what the noise is. Haha. But anyway, thanks!

my old gearbox did it and the replacement does too..it seems to be a harmonic frequency that goes through the driveline... annoying but incredibly frustrating (and expensive) to solve as youd have to swap out gearbox and diff and get a combination of parts that doesnt do it

Replacing the boots around your shifter made mine heaps quieter, most of the time these boots are torn which allows more noise in

Mine does it too, but when your daily is a quiet automatic boring econobox, you learn to enjoy every rattle, pop, bang, and fart the classic japanese sports car makes.
