Wet floor carpet under seats

Post by hotkiwi » Tue May 24, 2011 3:52 pm

Friends,
i noticed this morning that the frontwindow of my NB was all wet inside. Had not used the car for 5 days. Looked inside and the seats felt somewhat moist. The carpet under the seats was even more moist and putting my finger underneath there was a bit of water. in the boot there was some condensed water on the spare wheel, but there was nowhere water and the upholstery in the boot was dry. I had a brandnew softtop installed about 9 months ago and do not think that is leaking (it is the American brand of softtops, seems to be a good one, done by the Mazda guy in hamilton).

Thanks for any help !

Most likely that the drains from the rainrail are blocked. These are in the B pillar, almost alongside the upper seatbelt mounts. There is a tube that runs down inside the bodywork and exits under the car.

They are not easy to see or get at but there is a small plastic "cup" with hole in the bottom that feeds into the tube. It is located just below the hinge for the top.

If the interior of the car is already wet you could blast it out with a hose, otherwise use a length of wire to push the rubbish out of the hole. Best to do it outside unless you want a wet garage floor.

Compressed air might be safer or a length of wire. There is usually a flap at the bottom of the tube & i suspect this is mainly why they clog as it traps gunk over time.

The drains being blocked wouldn't explain damp seats though, but it's definitely worth putting a piece of wire down to clear any blockages. I had that problem with the drainage hole next to the fuel filler cap and it was a very comforting sound to hear, the blocked water all pouring down suddenly at once.

Also check for water coming in around the tailights and aerial.
The sills have 2 drain points taht also need to be kept clean.

on the soft top just about half way along the top of the side window is where the soft top folds. the rubber seal kind of butts together at this fold and often the leak from there and drip onto the seat and floor. give the rubbers a bit of a massage and lower/raise the top a few times and see if this cures it.
