Paint oxidized overnight?!
Anyone know what could have caused this?
It rained while I was out on Wednesday, so I had to put the cover on a wet car. No big deal, its a quality breathable one that wicks the moisture off really quickly.
Then when I took the cover off last night to go out, I was met by this nightmare, big oxidized watermarks on the boot and one front and rear panels. It doesn't buff out, its like someone's poured bleach on it.
I'm at a loss to explain it, the inside of the car cover looks fine in the corresponding spots, and while it smells musty when damp, there's no chemical smell to speak of.
I'm pretty unhappy right now, to say the least. This is going to cost me a packet to fix, and I'm too scared to use the $100+ car cover anymore.

Thanks Brownie
Yup, you're onto it Brownie.
Both panelbeaters I went to (sprsta's shop was one of them) said the same thing, and yes, it's the panels repaired by a previous owner that are giving me grief.
I guess I can't complain, most cars this age are cracking and peeling already. Still hurts though, I can't justify forking out on a respray at this stage. Still saving up for the cambelt etc, which may be 35k+ overdue.
And don't try sell me one, I live next to broomfish!

There's a blue one around Pt Chev area with its roof and back window in tatters, so yeah, I'm not as hard done by as I feel...

yup SLYDIT's paint looked just like that right before the clearcoat started to peel off.
i would say that what has happened is that your car cover has trapped a bit of water under it against the car...then the sun came out and heated up the car cover especially where it was stuck to the car with the water....the water transfered the heat straight into the paint. Kinda like steaming wallpaper off.
The original paint didnt have clearcoat so any panel with clear is a repainted panel.. i'm tempted to have a go at repainting SLYDIT myself next summer.
