What have I done? twice now I have stopped the car and taken the key out and then straight away replaced the key and tried to start the car, all that happens is it turns over but doesnt fire and a light under the speedo flashes on and off. I take the key out and leave it for ten minutes and then it starts like normal.
any questions or ideas, let me know. cheers

Does it have an alarm/immobiliser in it? Some alarms have a strange 'anti-carjacking' feature that can do odd things like that.

Yup it does, a uniden alarm /immobiliser.
Thats the first thing i thought of but reset the alarm twice and it didnt help, also weird with the dash light flashing on and off.

Yeah fair point, you'd expect the alarm warning light to do that instead if it was the alarm (and assuming it has a warning light). Is the flashing light any distinctive shape?

there are two lights under the speedo, one for the lights going up and one for the hold button for the auto.

when alarm guys program a new remote they do some strange on off on off with the key then press the remote button and things like that.you may be doing half of something like that or an immobiliser code or something by mistake

That light flashing is an indication of a fault. When i inadvertantly started my NA8 without any trans fluid in it the light flashed to tell me i was a dork.
This info is from forum.miata.net
The HOLD light flashes a code similar to the Check Engine Light. You can cancel the codes from memory by removing the negative battery cable for at least 20 seconds and pressing the brake pedal. You might want to try doing that first.
To pull the code, connect the TAT and GND terminals in the data link connector with a jumper. Turn on the ignition, and the transmission control module flashes the Hold light with the code. The codes are 2-digit and are as follows for the 95 (I assume the 94 is the same):
06 - Vehicle speed sensor or circuit
12 - Throttle position sensor or circuit
55 - Input/turbine speed sensor or circuit
60 - Shift solenoid A or circuit
61 - Shift solenoid B or circuit
62 - Shift solenoid C or circuit
63 - Torque converter clutch control solenoid valve or circuit
62 - 3-2 control solenoid valve or circuit

hey Peter, I'm a bit thick

when you say 2 digit code does that mean for 12 as an example it flashes once pause then twice and stops or repeats. cheers
