Leather Gearbox Gaiter

Post by Bob K » Sun Apr 18, 2010 12:02 pm

I am having trouble removing the gear shift knob so I can replace the gaiter.
I have cut the old one and removed it together with the central plastic housing but I still can't see how to remove the knob.
Instructions on the web simply say "unscrew the knob" The knob feels spongy on the shaft and wont come free by hand or with gentle pressure with two sets of pliers.
What am I missing?

If it is like my one, the plastic is fairly soft so it requires a bit of torque before the force is transferred to the actual thread

* will not be held responsible for breaking of said knob from extreme twisting :P

Thanks for your prompt replies guys.
The knob is the standard plastic 5 speed NA one.
It seems to be of firm if not hard material and it is locked firmly onto the top section of the lever/shaft. The spongy feel occurs between the top shaft and the lower one. I now think there is a rubber joint between these two.

I guess I'll need to hold the top shaft and twist the knob firmly with pliers and hope not to do any damage. I am reluctant to do this and I hope to find a better method.

Any further ideas?

Well, I used the pliers trick (carefully) and it worked. And no damage either Timmo.
Cheers.
