High rev smoking

Post by MikeyH » Thu Apr 08, 2010 11:51 am

Gidday, I have an 91 NA 1.6 with 250k's on the clock. Does a great job getting me up and down the akl southern motorway every day (~120k round trip) and provided I don't drive like a maniac through the hills between our block and the motorway out at the bombay hills i go through a small amount of oil between changes.

However if I get the old girl up past 5 or 6 thou revs she blows a bit of smoke out the back which takes the enjoyment out of a good drive (and increases oil consumption), i'd like to get her fixed especially as i'm eyeing up those Hampton downs track days in the future....

Is this a heads off job, or a valve seal? Any advice appreciated. I like to do my own work on this wee car, great fun.

Cheers!

id be picking it needs a set of rings

whole engines/long blocks with less ks than yours can be picked up pretty cheaply if you dont want to fork out for a rebuild

valve stem seals will generally show up as smoking on startup. but then smoking while under load is more likely to be rings.
As above a simple engine swap out is the most cost effective solution as engines are pretty bullet proof nad so are cheap second hand.

A complete engine swap from start to finish takes me around 13 - 15 hours. (Gone are the days where I could pull an engine/gearbox out of an Escort in about an hour!)
