gearbox oil change

gear change has been feeling stiffer. harder to get into 3rd. gonna do gearbox oil change and diff while im at it. anything i need to know that i might not know already. anything i need to beware etc.

Make sure you can undo the filler bung BEFORE you let the oil out of the diff or gearbox... sounds like common sense but a few people have been caught out that way by seized bungs before! IIRC I just threaded some plastic hose down through the engine bay to fill the gearbox as the filler isn't easily accessible to pour straight in, if you have a pump it will do the job fine too.

Also worth checking (replacing if necessary) the shifter boots/gaiters and changing the small amount of oil in the shifter turret - doesn't have to be gearbox oil for that, any old slop should do. Easiest tool I found for that was one of those big plastic syringes that cooking-minded people use for something called basting.

If you are changing the gearbox oil then it is best to use the correct oil in the shifter turret. It only requires a total of about 80 or 90ccs of oil.

Check the drain plug for metal bits. There will probably be a bit of sludgy stuff on it which is normal wear but anything solid could indicate a problem. Clean it off properly before you put it back in. Drain plug should be torqued to 29-43 lb ft /39-59Nm. If you can get a torque wrench on the filler plug torque it to 18-29lb ft / 25-39 Nm. The head of the filler is square, not hex.

cheers for both your tips.all done now and diff at the same time.shifting is much nicer now and the diff is surprisingly quite improved.i suppose it being viscous its effectiveness is directly related to the viscousity and quality of the oil.it locks much better now.it was very easy only took about 15mins for both on the hoist at work.

What grade/type of oils should go into the dif/gearbox respectively, and where's the best place to pick it up from?

on this topic, Supercheap have the pumps that fit on top of an oil container and make this job much easier. Didn't have them when I did my gear box but it really helped with the diff.

the 6spd can be filled via the shifter turret which is handy.
