what is it and what does it do.can i get rid of it.a catch can would be far more useful in that position

It's part of the emissions control system. Catches fuel vapour.
As NZ isn't hot on requiring original emissions equipment to be retained you could remove it without any problem. I did on my racecar while it was still road legal and never had any problems with WOFs.

nope
the ecu threw up a trouble code when it had the factory ecu fitted because i disconnected the controller box
but wont put it into limp mode or anything and you will never see a check engine light (ever)
i only found the code about 6months later when i was checking for another problem
