i turned on my air con for the first time in 6months the noise becomes much much greater.then i noticed the main pully seemed to have an odd movement to it looked almost side to side.is it the belt maybe fooling my eyes.a busted bearing or something in the a/c pump? gunna pull off the belt tomorrow and and see if the noise disappears completely. excuse to pull of the pump and shed some kilos. but opinions in the mean time would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear that, What year is yours?

I have an early short nose version and I'm aware that is a weaker point in an engine design. if I do not maintain that properly, it's eventually going to deform the key way and broken like yours, wobbly pulley is some typical symptom. (I've hard many smiler incidence with later stronger design so it not always happen to SNC).

Speaking of that, when the timing belt is changed or some reason the bolt has been removed, always use new key and bolt and lock tight.
(just search Short nose, SNC or smiler in Miata.net forum.)

I hope it's not too bad and still fixable, I would contact Mazline or dealer for the new parts. If the key way is badly deform, you may want swap the engine or fabricate new key to match.

I'm really sorry for that and I hope I'm wrong here and someone correct me.

The 92 should have the bigger crank nose to begin with.

managed to get the gear off today. had to drill and tap two threads in it and use a puller on it. bloody hard but atleast its out...so next step is order all the parts tomorrow. will update when its all back together and running. while its off the ground ill be installing the new king lowering springs. hope they are stiff enough.

As I state what I've hard/seen in other forums are this is not only a SNC problem but with other later design as well. It's all comes to how it was maintained.

Make sure torqued properly.

I've hard it is fixable if that was not too bad, but I didn't know how it was actually done. Thanks for sharing.
