Once a year they have a driver training day at Taupo where after a series of short tests like braking, cornering, stopping etc you get to thrash around the track for a couple of hours called "hot laps".
Done it myself & quite a lot of fun.

The Driver Training day is usually in February.

There are a number of other options. If you are in Auckland, you can use Pukekohe on days that are listed as Controlled Testing on the Events Calendar at http://www.countiesracing.co.nz/motor-racing/ I guess the other tracks will also have their own web sites with their track days listed.

There is also Playday on Track, check out http://www.playdayontrack.co.nz/ for their organised track days. I see that they have 3 days schedules at Hampton Downs next week. It would pay to check if that is still happening as I know that there are some issues around the readiness of the track. Having just driven the track this week on the Targa I can assure you that it is an experience and a half. Make sure you take a few laps to learn it before going hard out.

MX5 Club is not affiliated to Motorsport NZ but if you want to get access to organised race days or sprints at race tracks then one of the cheaper options is the Sports Car Club of NZ (http://www.sccnz.co.nz/). Membership fee is quite reasonable and as they are affiliated to MSNZ, if you decide that you want to take things more seriously you can apply for a competition license.

Have fun.

Good to hear that Hampton Downs is good to drive! Regarding the event issues, I received an email from PlayDay that the one on the 16th should proceed as scheduled :)

I'll be there in my race car, would be happy to take people out for a session if they so wished - but beware I'm not the best driver, nor is my race car fast :P

Btw, PlayDay requires a rollbar to be fitted to open cars, including MX5's.

Actually, once a year the NZ Club has a driver training day, but it is
generally at different locations. Sometimes Pukekohe, sometimes Taupo,
and it has been Manfield in the past. Other local MX5 groups that are
affiliated to the NZ club have organised their own too in the past.

They would probably have more, but it is a lot of organisation, and the
'helpers' and 'organisers' are few and far between...

They are never 'open track days' (as the NZ club likes to be sure people
are still insured to drive), but there is usually a chance to have some
free laps, and people are placed in groups based on their experience.

cheers
