luggage rack?

Post by emexfive » Sun Nov 16, 2008 6:38 pm

I'm looking for a luggage rack/boot rack. Something removable, but secure to carry extra bags on a road trip. Preferably something in black, but mostly I need functionality not looks. I'd prefer to not spend a fortune, so used might be good. Any pointers on places to look. (I'm already checking mx5 mart and tradme)

Has anyone just used bungies and something soft like a towel to keep from scratching the paint? Probably wouldn't securely hold nearly as much as a rack however.

If your car is an NA, and you haven't done it already, mount the spare under
the boot. Almost doubles the useable boot space.
Get a MaXi5ac which also increases the luggage capacity of an NA or NB. Well
worth buying. Works with the roof up or down.
Use soft bags to maximise the space available. Have done road trips (two
people) of up to two weeks without the need of a boot rack.

Where do you get the Maxi5ac? MX5mart seems to have a rear shelf bag, is it like that?

Where can I find a spare relocation kit? I think I've seen those in the US, but they involved replacing exhaust piping.

Both seem like great ideas, but even with those I think I still might want a rack, any suggestions for sourcing one is welcome.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The MaXi5ac is available from an advertiser in Top Down magazine. Don't have
one here at present to give you more information. I just sold mine though to
a local member as I now have an NC.
I don't know of a kit to relocate the spare but here's some instructions to
do it yourself: <http://www.mx5club.co.nz/maintenance/spare_relocation/>
It's not difficult to do apart from the relocation of the exhaust. My NA had
a non standard muffler anyway which was small enough to give enough room
with a little bit of work by the local exhaust specialist.
