Sunny Saturday Drive in Taranaki

Post by MN » Sun Jul 08, 2007 3:55 pm

After horrendous winds in and around New Plymouth Thursday and Friday the predicted sunny weather with cool winds arrived and some 87 competitors left the start line yesterday for the Taranaki Tarmac Rally, including the 2 car Andys Screenprint MX5 team. The route was much tougher and longer than in previous years resulting in a low number of finishers - 58. Our MX5Mart/Andys Screenprint "5" was a finisher (51st) :) but Andy himself had a major spin on stage 1 dropping some 8 minutes extracting himself then crashing heavily about a third through the last stage and not finishing. Pace notes can be good but when they are misheard an even bigger "off" can eventuate as Andy found out. :x Average stage length was over 25km with most stages having some tight 2nd/3rd gear sections. Unfortunately all had some long high speed stuff which isn't any good for us - we reached 180 kph on one downhill straight  and found the engine cuts out at that point!

Overall a great route much better than in previous years, roll on next year :D :D
cheers,

Mark
