Window Leaks

Post by Sez » Fri Jul 07, 2006 7:42 pm

Hi all,

I have an 89 NA.....and no hard top! (Silly really when Palmy has some of the worst weather in the country!)

Does anyone have a solution to the leaks that come in through the splits in the foam window seal. All three of them leak on (ofcourse) the driver side.

Is it possible to somehow improve the seal but still be able to put the roof down?

Thanks in advance.

Sez

Thanks Greg,

I don't receive Topdown (need to get my 'A' into 'G' and join the club), but I might have a word to an auto interior as you say.

I just thought a number of you would have experienced the same thing and might of come up with a nifty little system of fixing it yourself!

I can not remember exact link but I saw some article in Miata.Net or mx5oc uk.

That is that remove all the rubber part and adjust fixing metal bits toward to the window, so it fit more tightly.

Another says for temp fix using gel like Vaseline between the joint of the two pieces. (I have not tested so I can not t6ake responsibility for this solution though....)

I suggest serche there...

Ther is also a cable that runs inside the soft-top from the front edge down to about half way up the window, where it attached to a spring. You can't see the cable as it's inside the roof but you can see the spring on the inside back edge of the window. These cables break as mine has and you lose the tight fit.

You will need someone who is experienced with MX5 soft tops to replace the cable though as it's a bit hard to explain. If you are ever up in Hamilton see Don at Autoway services. He's great.

You can buy a cable from WWW.mx5mart.co.nz.

Thanks guys.

It's clearly much more involved than I originally thought so I'll just take it in and leave it to the professionals.

But all good advice (Vaseline......interesting!).

Yeah, as I said, I haven’t tried, but if the leak is coming from the tiny gap, this solution will seal it temporally.. (I guess.)

This link might be interesting....

http://www.miata.net/garage/weatherstrip/index.html

This is not strictly for the gap, all the small leak eventually drips around gap.
Some case (in the very heavy rain), leak comes not only from gap.
I might try the adjusting or this method some time in the future...
