best phone holder for NC

Hi all. Mine still has the Bose 6 CD changer head unit that I don't want to change, so I want to use my phone for navigation. Do the suction type phone holders work on the dash top? This surface is not flat or smooth. What types are recommended and where are you mounting them please? I'd don't want to cover one of the round air vents either.
