Hand Brake on 94 1.8
Hand Brake on 94 1.8
I was refused a warrant on my 94 1.8 because the hand brake wasnt griping
equally on both sides. The left caliper is the one not gripping.
I had the pads changed and the whole system lubed
and adjusted without it making any difference.I was then told that when this
happens you have to change the caliper - they cant be fixed. To make matters
worse
I cant find a second hand caliper - there are plenty of 1.6's but no 1.8's.
My question is can they be fixed and can any one recommend someone in Auckland
who can do it.

I have heard that the left rear caliper is notorious for seizing or
otherwise failing in the MX5. Anyway, that's what happened to mine, so I
whipped the caliper out and had it reco'd at a place on Wairau Road for
under $150. Whacked it back in and away we go. Twelve months later and all
is still good.

Maybe you just need a seal kit? You can buy these from Mazda and rebuild it
yourself (or get a mechanic to rebuild it). If it is leaking slightly you
won't get pressure in the piston - so lubing won't make a difference.
I know of a 1.6 1990 with that exact prob.
cheers

Some one may have already answered this, but arent
the calipers on the 1.6 AND 1.8 the same?? I thought
that it was just the caliper mounting that was
different to accomadate the bigger caliper.

Glenn, the calipers on the front are the same (I've just put the 1.8
discs on the front with the 1.8 brackets and 1.6 calipers) but I believe
there is some difference in the handbrake system on the calipers between
the 1.6 and 1.8.

The guys at Rotary Power who were trying to fix my hand brake found that
there is a difference between the 1.6 & 1.8 rear caliper. They had one to
compare.
But I have found out that they can be rebuilt ( thanks Fletch) so I'm
getting it done next week.
Thanks to everyone who replied.

The 1.8 callipers take a larger pad.The discs are bigger front and rear as well.Ross.
