Dave did you soak the lifters in oil first? Sometimes you then have to bleed
them by working them while they are in the oil, though I have only done this
once in the last 20 years.

Noisey lifter's

Hi Dave,
This topic comes up for discussion from time to time.
From my experience with both the MX5 and occasionly in my '96 Maxima,
the offending lifter/s will be noisy only if I start the car for a few
seconds, ie to move out of the garage for say cleaning, put it back in
the garage, and start the car the following day. Thats when the lifters
will be noisy.
A similar situation will be say, parking and stopping the engine in
front of the garage and leaving the car a couple of hours prior to
putting it away. Next morning the lifters may be noisy especially in
cold weather.
Intermittent use of the vehicle seams also to increase the incidence.
I would be interested if anyone has found Castrol Magnitec will reduce
or elliminate this problem.
Cheers,
Ken

I've been using Magnatec oil for a few years now. I think it might help because I don't get lifter noise until it's time for another oil change.
I think that on the previous oil, the noise would start after only 1000kms or so.
The noise is really handy because it reminds me to change my oil and serves to nag me if I put it off for too long.
