Possum

I was away in the UK when it happened and have yet to see a full report of the
accident. Can anyone enlighten me as to what actually happened? >From the
brief report I read, it sounded horribly like a stupid accident that killed a
friend of ours at Doune Hillclimb in the 80's.

You might be interested to know that the accident was reported in no less a
publication than The Times of London - proof of Possum's truly world stature.

It seems, according to most reports, that during a course recon, Possum was
returning downhill, several others were still travelling uphill. The Jeep at
the end of these crested a rise either in the middle of the road or on
Possum's side and hit his subaru wagon at the drivers side front corner.
Apparently there was a lot of dust reducing vis, still not an excuse. Speed
was about 60 km/h for both vehicles.
A complete and utter waste of a life.
I bet he and Rog will have a lot to talk about.

As far as I am aware, Possum has not passed away yet so lets have some faith -
not official report on the accident has been released - lets not be part of
the remour mill. As a club we should respect all parties involved and not be
pre emtive.

Yeah, but I still see Lou's point of view. SUV's... bigger goes first etc, I
treat other cars as they haven't seen me (years of pushbike riding taught me
that) And frankly (donning flak jacket) coming here from Norway and
experiencing the way people drive here... EEEEK. You know, Norway's got snow
and ice conditions 2/4's of the year at the best, which makes driving
difficult, yet the road toll for Norway is far below NZ... Having seen the
way some people drive in this country... no wonder
*shudder*

Sad news this morning, I guess it was inevitable when they say they're
removing life support.
On the subject of poor driving, most people don't realise that advanced driver
training is not encouraged by the LTSA on the basis that it will make drivers
'over confident'. In fact, when I was driver testing the LTSA removed
incentives to have even basic professional driver training, they have
rectified this to a small degree now though.
If anyone doubts the efficacy of proper training. When I was in the MOT, a
third to a half of our 3 months training was devoted to practical car and
motorbike skills. The result was that our accident rate was miniscule compared
to the Police, whose training was and still is woeful, despite us carrying out
far more high speed pursuits.
Yet, today, it is possible to get a licence without knowing how to parallel
park.
I'd like to see mandatory training, much tougher tests and, dare I say it,
periodic retesting of all drivers. Combine this with improved roads and you'll
really see a reduction in accident rates, not just fatals.
As far as 4WD's go, the one saving grace is that they kill their occupants
more often than other parties.
