Style Bars

Post by greg.powell » Mon Apr 28, 2003 7:37 pm

I have a black V Spec which I think would look great with chrome or maybe
alloy style bars fitted. These normally mount on the seatbelt pillars and are
easy to fit. However I have been told that if they are mounted to the seat
belt pillars the vehicle will not meet WOF standards. I phoned two WOF
approvers, one said no warrant and the other said no problem. Has anyone who
has style bars fitted ever had problems in getting a warrant.

The other issue this raises, is that if the car is not up to WOF standards
because style bars are fitted, then will your insurance cover apply?

Also if anyone knows where I could source style bars in either Dunedin or Chch
then I would appreciate a reply. The one or two I have seen so far have been
really poorly made.

Yes, Ken commented about Lichfield Sreet Testing Station (Christchurch)
failing a WOF. I sent an email to LTSA over a month about this issue. I'll
chase it up as an Offical Information Act request, to push them.

I am thinking that there are 2 things that the MX5 club website could do as
a service to members:

1. Maintain a record of WOF places that have failed an
MX5 for a reason that is considered pedantic (location,
date, cause, MX5 club member number).

2. Maintain a record of ticket infringments for a
reason that is considered pedantic (location, date,
cause, MX5 club member number, police district).

This would serve several purposes:
a) Highlight inconsistencies in districts / WOF stations
b) Be an accurate record for future lobbying
c) Be a member resource

The MX5 club member number means we can prove it wasn't made up, if we ever
need to support our claims.

zorruno - would that be possible with your website database system?

Greg,
My wife's car has the seat belt mounted style bar and I've never had any problems getting a WOF.

I have had a black s special with style bars for 3 years with no warrant
issues. Remember these are "STYLE" bars not roll bars and are only cosmetic

Thanks for this, Mathew - I recall the debate well as I had asked a
Christchurch company to tell me as soon as chromed ones were back in stock,
then all the stuff about WOF's came up. The company came through just before
I went to the UK for 4 weeks, which was a good excuse to make no decision.
However, I am still undecided as to whether to buy one for some slight
additional protection and take it off every time I need a WOF, or go
without.

Does anyone happen to know what happens in insurance & legal terms if you
fit one after the WOF and then have an accident - whether you hurt yourself
against the bar or not?

By the way, anyone thinking of driving in the UK - don't bother. Apart from
one glorious trip (in a Fiat Punta?) through Perthshire, the rest of the
time was spent queuing or trying to park. It's good to be back!

I have had style bars built by Race FX for at least 3 years which are only
attached on the seatbelt pillars. In those 6 warrants (all from a testing
station) I have never even been questioned about them.

If anything is done to a vehicle to make it so that it would not get a WOF,
then that vehicle is considered not WOFable so should not be used. The WOF
only shows that the vehicle was ok at the time of the check. If you drive a
vehicle that would not pass a WOF, then the insurance company doesn't have
to pay out. Just check your policy. So if you have an accident with an
'unsafe' style bar (silly rule) then they would be within their rights to
refuse to pay out. Plus you could be ordered off the road. This is just as
unsafe as having a stick on number plate. Probably cost more than if you
were caught speeding, being such a heinous crime.
That's how I understand it.

Just picked up my MX5 after getting the radiator repaired. The Auto
Radiators people in Nelson charged me $366.00 incl GST to replace the top
tank on the radiator and also replace a couple of worn belts. Included
removal and re-installation of the radiator etc as well. I thought this was
very reasonable for the job done and the friendly service.

Pretty darn bizarre...

How is it that you can have an "illegal" registration plate & pass a WOF, yet
have "legal" style bars & fail a WOF? I also wonder what the LTSA make of the
"get you off the ground faster" race car style rear wings seen on the back of
some boy racer cars?

reg plates are not a safety issue... I love those rear wings, they always
remind me of the old style park benches (probably just as effective too)...
Aren't rear wings supposed to add traction to the rear of the car therefore
the ones on a front wheel drive are actually losing them grip?

Yeah good point about the front wheel drive. Another thing is that you need
to go considerably fast in order to get that rear wing effect. So most
people are driving around with picknic tables on their rear for show off
reasons only

Actually when facing the back of those cars I always think they look like
giant handbags ;)

My wife calls them "God handles" because they look look a convenient way for
a giant arm to reach down and grab the back of the car...(wish it would
happen sometimes!)
