stick on plate ammendment bill

Post by SLYDIT » Sun Apr 13, 2003 7:53 pm

ok so basically what we need to do is draw up some
sort of ammendment to the "plate/licensing bill".
We could call it the "sports and classic car
registration ammendment bill"(sounds good eh!)
It could be worded in this basic model...
"where a vehicle was not originally designed to be
fitted with a front registration plate (Ie it doesnt
have a reccess for that specific purpose) of ltsa
design, subject to clause 14, then the vehicle may
carry a reflective stick on plate that is no smaller
than 60% of car vehicle plate size.Alternitively no
plate may be displayed providing that it is placed on
a data base of "non front plate" cars so that in the
event of an infringement the vehicle and driver may be identified.
This would mean that cars such as MX's and Ferraris
and hot rods etc could be exempt from carrying a front
plate in just the same way as pre 1950 cars dont have
to have seatbelts!! we could send the draft to all the
relevent car clubs and get them to sign a petition
forwarded an MP who will back it.
Alternatively we could get one of our members to stand
for parliment and pass all the bills that we
want!!(Hmmm MX5 anniversary week sounds good to me!)
Any other thoughts about this?

People who draft bills, don't like starting from scratch - it would help if
someone could find details of a precedent in another country, e.g. the UK,
and start by copying that wording.

Most laws typically involve some policy analysis about safety/legal
compliance/cost etc. For instance, it may be that you end up with white
reflector tape along the bumper instead, if you have no plate.

I'm just new to the MX5 world having owned one just a few weeks. When I
purchased it privately I was nervous of the stick on plate as I had been
looking at Lotus 7 type kit cars and many owners had real plates that didn't
suit as the Constructors Club had been battling with the LTSA over this issue.
My car had been issued warrants by VTNZ in Wellington since they first
opened so it will be interesting next warrant as I'll be doing that in Upper
Hutt.
How are people getting warrants if it's not legal or are they sticking the
real plates back on just to get the warrant ?

this is the stupid thing. It is not a legal requiredment by WOF standards to
have a plate at all on the front, but it is by law!
How can something that is required by law, not be a requirement for a WOF?
this is somehting I wrote in my letter to the police regarding my ticker for
no front plate. No reply on this matter but my reason for not having the
plate was good enough to get off so I left it at that.
