jackson, turbo etc + police chase

Post by Chic & Morven » Wed Mar 26, 2003 9:54 am

I was over in England recently and I met up with Mike Saint. We went to the UK MX5 club trackday at Donington park race track.
Mike's car has an FMII turbo on it which he fitted himself. (outdoors, in the snow). From the Dyno charts at flyinmiata.com, I'd guess it produces about 250hp at the wheels. I drove about half the day both at the track and on the roads, all that power is so much Fun. At the track we overtook all the Porches (I'm not sure what variant of 911 they were), a new BMW M3, a WRX, a GT40 to name a few. The only car that overtook me was a crazy Escort Cosworth and a couple of the open wheeled race cars.

The power is really smooth and, to me, it felt like a stock engine but with 3 times the power. A JR SC owner drove it and thought the power wasn't as instant as that in his car, but as a neutral in the SC vs TC war, I have to say the turbo felt right. Absolutely amazing.

So am I saving up to buy one? Well no, Power is too addictive (just ask Bush or Saddam). I'd lose my licence straight away in New Zealand.
For example, (I may have told this story before)
In January I was on my way to Pauanui, I'd just turned off the main road on to the Pauanui road and I noticed a dark blue family saloon behind me. He seemed to be trying to catch up. Ah... I thought, I'll show him. So I put my foot down. He looked like he was still trying to catch me, so I push on faster. After about 10 minutes of twisty roads (and a few straights) I'd pulled away a bit and we came to a long straight just before Pauanui. He caught up with me there and thats when... the flashing blue lights came on.
Bugger... I'd been in a police chase and hadn't even realised.

We stopped and he came over to me and asked what kind of car I was driving. I told him and there was a few second silence, then he said "They handle all right don't they". I didn't dare say my tyres were quite worn and my wheel alignment was out otherwise it would have handled better. (not to mention the new Koni shocks sitting beside me as I type, ready to go in at the weekend).

He checked my licence, that the car was mine, that I hadn't been drinking etc. Anyway, the outcome was I didn't even get a ticket. I guess that, even though I was driving flat out, I was driving within the speed limit (more or less) . I'm also guessing that, with a turbo'd car, I would have gone faster on the straights and been in big trouble (or I might have pulled away and lost him, I suppose).

Hmmmm. Holden or Falcon, sole occupant, little lights in grille. Requires
circumspection rather than competition.

Apparently there is at least one unmarked Nissan 200SX on the force in Waikato
as well, which would give most people a very nasty surprise - lovely cars to
drive but steer clear in the wet...

Thats right, they had a bunch of them over a holiday period 2 or 3 years ago.
I thought they all went back to Nissan, but obviously not. A flea of the
highway that's joined the darkside.

Apparantly we also need to be aware of red Hi-ace vans parked on the
side of the road with the back door CLOSED!! I understand the camera
brigade bought a number before Xmas - any confirmation?

I'm always wary of any Falconmodore and look for steel wheels/no
covers, grille lights, extra aerial and that dangerous dash box!

Not that responsible drivers like us need to worry as we obey the law!

All you people coming over for the Tauranga event look
out for a Dark green L300 van parked at the side of
the road(usually under trees) its a camera van. Also a
light green nissan navara ute with canopy that usually
does truck weighing but is quite happy to pull over
cars for tickets too. Also Dark blue EL Falcon XR6 UTE
with canopy, from truck division too.
