lifter noise

Post by Grant Schou » Wed Mar 26, 2003 9:32 am

Hi, have been plagued by lifter noise again - done engine flush and running Mobil Super S. Things were okay until one day when I put Mobil 1 in, then it all turned to custard. Tried Promar additive - worked for about 3-4000k and still have lifter noise - problem hot or cold and random.

Any suggestions on what oil is best ? will try another flush

Try flushing with 3 litres Auto Trans fluid, 1 litre 20/50 oil.
ATF is very high in detergents. Or, if you don't trust that, use Redline
engine flush.
I found Mobil Racing 4T was best in mine for lifter noise, it's 15/50
motorcycle oil same as Mobil 1 was before it changed to 5/50. Make sure you
use OEM Mazda filter.
Having said all that, I've had lifter noise to a greater or lesser degree for
years. Never done any harm.

lifter noise

I just use Shell Helix Plus, semi synthetic. Its not too expensive. When fresh there is no lifter noise, when old there will be a little just on startup. I used to use Mobil 1, but it was more expensive, and no better at this. Some have suggested that soaking the new oil filter with fresh oil for 24 hours before fitting it helps. I've tried this, no verdict except that its messy.

On the subject of oil, check bobistheoilguy.com. Incredibly anal retentive
posts on anything to do with oils. But very informative too, apparently
there's real synthetics and less real synthetics on the market. Mobil 1 and
Amsoil are highly regarded, others less so.
BTW. Mobil 4T costs $57 from Cycletreads Takapuna, not much dearer tham
premium dino oil.
