Update on stylebars

Post by Mathew » Mon Mar 10, 2003 1:17 pm

I just went for my lunchtime wander and picked up the latest NZPC mag, so my previous comments were now on last months mag. A quick scan through the new mag reveals some more info. A roll bar must not interfere with the seatbels in any way and must be 150mm rearward of anyones head (doesn't sound to good for my setup), and it also states that any bar material within 300mm must have the appropriate padding fitted (double drat!).

That sounds like a typical Govt. dept. As if your head will move 300 mm when
you're strapped in! If it did, you'd be past needing a roll cage.

Update on stylebars

Well that 300mm rule means that several cars
available new would fail the certification procces.
the Audi TT is one i can think of. If your Mazda came
into New Zealand with them fitted on then they must
have been included in the cert when the car was
certified and given its VIN to be registered in NZ.
If the bars were not of a certifiable standard etc
then it should never have been given its import cert.
to what standard do bars have to comply??? is there a
weight that they have to support or do all bars have
to over-engineered to race spec just to keep the red tapers happy.
A Style bar that fits under the mazda top is generally
behind and at a level where it would be impossible to
hit your head on. I have a feeling that the 300mm rule
is for the side "b pillar" bars as found in 6 point
cages. if it was next to your seat than you could hit
your head on it in a side impact. In my opinion in the
unlikely event of a rollover id rather have anything
holding up the car other than my head!!! And that
includes my DIY style bars.
