Fuel problems

Post by Chrissy & Tony Hoys » Tue Feb 18, 2003 7:56 am

My cutemx is spluttering all over the place - think it needs to give up
smoking! Hubby has changed the fuel filter and it was fine for a few days
but has started the cough and splutter again, he thinks he may need to take
out the fuel tank and check for crap and corrosion. Is this a hard job, has
anyone done this or do you have any bright ideas to help.
Thank you all.

Chrissy

HI
try changing the spark plug leads first, or even the spark plugs, if the
leads are the originals its common
for them to break down after a few years, and its and easy option before the
fuel system.

It may be the HT leads, try another set.
If it is fuel related, try a bottle of Red Line SI-1 fuel system cleaner. I've
used it in my bike, my wifes car and my work car. Excellent at cleaning gunge
out of the fuel system and also removes small amounts of water from the tank.
If there is more water in the tank, try 200 - 300 mls of ethanol or iso propyl
alcohol.

Mine did this a few weeks ago. Every time I moved the plug leads, tightened
the connections etc. it came right for maybe a day then returned. Replaced
the spark plugs and all back to normal.
Easier than removing the fuel tank!
Good luck,
Grant.

Hi Chrissy

HT leads are my guess too. I had that prob a few years ago & I was sure it
was fuel related, but fuel or spark related, it is hard to tell the
difference as they both result in a misfire or jerkiness under acceleration.
Plug leads breaking down seems to be the most common issue MX5s have. It is
only a 10 minute fix luckily :)

cheers

If its water in the tank, methelated spirits will also work.

Ditto with me regards new leads. In fact it was zorruno who suggested the
leads solution which worked. Believe you can't go wrong by replacing them.
