Hi There
Question:You guys that have installed Turbo or JSC have you had the car
certified for the modification?
If so, who can do it and how much?

Turbo
Hello John,
I have just gone through this as I was looking at a turbo/engine combo for my
car.
First thing I did was to talk to the testing station guys at 2 different
locations, Upper Hutt and Wellington, they both told me that they would need
to see a compliance cert before giving the car a WOF.
I then checked with my insurance company who stated at first that they
couldn't see an issue with it as I have a very good record with them but later
stated that the car would have to be complianced and if all was well it would
cost me extra to cover it depending on the amount of horse power generated but
up to $120.00 extra per year.
The compliance cert was going to be anywhere from $350.00 to $550.00 depending
on the amount of time taken.
The other thing that you have to factor into the costs is anything that they
will require you to do in the way of modifications to make the car safe I.e.
brakes, suspension and steering which seem to be the things that they pick on.
I was advised that all this should be ok on the MX5 though. I would recommend
though that you buy a strut tower brace and stiffen the chassis, Ross at MX5
Mart should be able to help you with these.
I hope this helps.
Dave.
