Plastic Pocket when replacing stock radio
Plastic Pocket when replacing stock radio
I'm loaded with questions lately..
When I replaced my stock radio in my MX5 in the US I had to purchase a
plastic pocket that took up the additional space created by my new
radio/cd player.
As I have a 91 BRG spec edition, the stock CD/ Cassette/ AM-FM radio
takes up a lot of space.
I'm sure many have removed this and have installed a new radio/cd/etc
-What about the 'plastic pocket"?
Where can you get one?
Is there a need for different size pockets depending on the replacement
system you install?
Thanks in advance.
Regards
Bill

the replacement pocket you need is not a standard
size. You may be able to get one from a stereo shop
but i havent noticed any about.
Your best bet is to go to the wreckers and get one out
of an early 90's mazda 626/ford telstar or some late
80's toyota corolla. Then just trim the top 15mm or so
off the top of it with a hack saw so that it fills the
space exactly. It is held in place with a small dab of
silicon on the back of the box.Looks like factory and
cost just $5!

Cubbyholes
Following is a list of various Mazda cubbyholes that can be useful in
installations (thanks to Cynthia Paloma). The black plastic radio
storage bin/dash pocket/cubby is referred to as a "Stereo Ornament" in
the Mazda parts catalog. Metrawire supposedly also makes a Mazda Miata
fit kit for aftermarket radios, it is part number #71-7901. This might
be available from audio shops, but I have no specific contact number.
. FC02-55-235A - 1.5 DIN (same size as stock radio w/cassette).
This part comes from the 90 Miata only. Can be cut down to size to fit
under a 1 DIN sized aftermarket radio, providing plenty of space and
reportedly looks good.
. LA03-55-235A - 0.5 DIN (same size as the space under the stock
radio w/cassette).
. The following Mazda part was listed in the Winter 1990 issue of
Miata Magazine on page 12: 0000-81-0147 - 1 DIN (supposedly OEM on all
Euro-spec Miatas). *Note 1
. The following is a Mazda 323 part: B092-55-235B - 0.5 DIN, only
2 inches deep. Mentioned in a letter in Miata Magazine under "Extra
Storage Space", p. 18 continued on p.41.

Plastic Pocket when replacing stock radio
When we replaced the stereo on our other car recently I asked the stereo
shop dude if he could get us a new pocket. He said no problem, so I asked
about one for the MX5. (We made our own out of MDF when we put in a new
stereo, and it looks okay, but not as good as the real thing). The stereo
shop dude said that it is a bit trickier to get one for an MX5, as they are
a non-standard size. He said a lot of the other cars have the same sizes
involved, so it's really easy to source pockets, but when it's out of the
ordinary it gets a bit more difficult (and I imagine more pricey!). Best
idea I think would be to try at Mazda. (Well, apart from the $5 wrecker
job, of course!)

Have a look at "Radio Cubby Box, Mk 1" on www.mx5parts.co.uk
<http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/> - it's currently on sale at GBP17.50
This is definitely the right thing - I have one in my NA.

Plastic Pocket when replacing stock radio
Plastic Pocket when replacing stock radioHi Bill, all modern head units are a
standard size (unless you go for the double DIN unit) with a height of 52mm
where as the factory original CD or Tape head unit is 60mm. The factory pocket
fits under the single head unit and therefore if you replace with a new head
unit and pocket you will have a gap of abot 8mm to fill. Most good car stereo
installers have spacers that can be used.
You could check with Don at autoway.services@xtra.co.nz or work ph (07) 847
5484 as I know he fits a lot of units into MX5's and may have a pocket and
spacer available or Ross at mx5mart may have them available as well.
I have replaced several in the cars I have owned and have always managed to
find a suitable pocket and spacer or made up a spacer with out too much
trouble.
If you are going to get an installer to put the unit in, make sure they know
how to remove the radio surround as I have seen many broken by inexperienced
installers.
If you want to come for a drive up to Browns Bay at some time I would be more
than happy to help you fit your xmas present!! I have put an MP3 head unit in
my MX5 (about $270.00 at parrallel imported in Constallation Drive, Albany)
and enjoy having 13 CD's on one disk.

Plastic Pocket when replacing stock radioHi Bill,
I replaced the standard Panasonic (Bose) Tape/Radio with a DIN sized Radio CD
player and found a Nissan pocket, from a Primera from memory, which fitted
exactly. I do recall however that, for a piece plastic shite, it was not cheap
but the end result was good

W Still waiting for them to come back with a price for shipping (18lbs+
shipping could become rather expensive -though it is time' I value more
than anything). Meanwhile, I explore "uncharted territory" with John
Andrews-Mazda Ford.
Hopefully I will have the same success with JA-M/F as Lewis & Clark (for
you students of Kiwi history, they were not from the UK) . To his
credit Mike over there is trying his best!

Plastic Pocket when replacing stock radio
ummm when u get it installed like l did they
fit well if they are professinal they do
I'm loaded with questions lately..

Plastic Pocket when replacing stock radio
Plastic Pocket when replacing stock radioHi,
I made my own pocket from a Tupperware type container, cost $3 and about
half an hour.
I measured the space as being 145mm deep, 177mm wide, 75mm high.
I then went to a shop selling plastic containers and found one that would
fit the depth & width (when placed into the gap sideways), but would be too
high.
By cutting one side off of the container it creates a plastic pocket that
fits the hole (the base of the stereo is exposed, but of course you don't
see it from a normal sitting position).
Of course I haven't actually got around to painting it black, or covering it
in leather, so it still looks like half a Tupperware container, but I'll get
around to finishing it one day and post some photos on my site when I do.
