A classic? Not according to Jeremy Clarkson and 'Top Gear' last Sunday. The NA
MX5 went on to the 'Crock' board - which only goes to prove that the show
tries to be deliberately controversial rather than accurate, of course.
Incidentally, following the trail of the story about them damaging a Jaguar
C-Type through manic testing, it appears that The Stig is none other than
Perry McCarthy, one-time F1 driver and author of the book 'Flat Out - Flat
Broke: Formula 1 the hard way' which is excellent reading.

Top Gear recently compared the MX5, MR2 and some Alfa Spyder thingy (not
sure about the last one - I'm pretty sure it was Italian).
They went on and on about how good the MX5 was and how much fun it was
to drive. I felt quite validated by it all.
I'm not sure if that episode has been shown in NZ yet. I think it was
from the last season (I have, ah, friends who download them a few days
after they're shown in the UK).

I see that on the Top Gear web site, the MX5 is listed under the Cool
category.
A pity the show is so out of date when we get to see it here. 5th gear is
even older, I think. Maybe they will catch up as Prime works its way through
the series (hopefully).

While you make a good point, if I'm not mistaken the idea behind a
toll road is a "joint project" involving both private and public
funding with the toll being used to cover the cost to the private
parties. That would imply that unless the entire funding for the road
was done privately it would still have a public element and ultimately
becomes property of the public once this tolling is done anyhow, so to
call it "not public" would be somewhat pushing the definition (IMHO
that is).
