I have also, in addition to Norton run Adaware and Spybot, which
identify programs running in the background that send information to
some third party. You would be amazed at how much of that goes on as a
result of your visiting some ligit sites. Everyone wants to know your
"viewing" habits.

They are both free downloads and I highly recommend them.

and then as a the final layer of protection Tiny Personal Firewall (also
free from most good download sites) gives you complete control of
incoming and outgoing connections - you'll be surprised how many times
during an average day an unauthorised program/person tries to connect to
an open port on your computer.
