The black bit along the sills... good or not...

Post by poison » Wed Sep 15, 2004 7:20 pm

Hi All

I'm about to get a few bits painted on my car (front lip spoiler, rear mud
flaps) and met up with Nigel.E (hi Nigel) the other day, he's suggested
painting out the black sills to make the car look lower. This seems like a
good idea (although harder to hide stone chips), my other mate seems to think
the black strip makes the car look lower. Has anyone else done this? And if so
what was the effect over the original.

I'd really like to compare, has anyone got a side on pic of a silver '5
without the black sill on the net somewhere please?

Cheers

Just had my red MX5 repainted & at Ross Campbell's recommendation had the
sills painted red other than the fin right at the bottom left black. The
paint shop (Wrightcar's in Onehunga Mall) used the same chip resistant paint
as per the original. Looks damn good.

Pray tell, why do you always put have paint on your sills at the bottom of the
car??? Don't know about others out there, but I think it's a pain in the ass,
No offence intended but I'd think you'd have noticed how everyone else has it at
the top of the car now. The fact you wrote earlier complaining about something
or other shows you're somewhat pedantic about such protocols??? Perhaps I'm
wrong here, but the fact everyone else puts the Paint at the top kind of
dictates the norm...

If you're on the shore (JAFA land) I had a guy paint the whole side of my car,
the rear number plate surround, plus fit and paint a spoiler for under $600.
It's silver with 2 pack clear, mostly good but the odd detail here and there
near trim is not always good but I've seen much worse work and paid more for
it. Anyway he's cheap, helpful and OK. Depends on the value of your car and
how much you want to spend. Drop me a line and I'll put you in touch if you
want.

Gazza

PS: Col' I have to admit that was very funny... bugger!

When I restored a 90 red (had been painted fuchsia pink, that's another story)
I had the lower sills painted red and the windscreen surround painted black
which gave the car a whole different profile. Can send photos if you give me
your email address.

Dave, I don't have any digi photo's at the moment. If you can't come round
sometime to see for yourself I'll take some. One Tree Hill in AK. Cost was
$2K cash but I did a lot of stripping down & reassembly.

I am in Wellington and dare not venture into Auckland after the Lions
hammering of the Blues...thanks for the info though it gives me a
good starting point.

Cheers,
Dave.

Gazza, check out my site for some pics. On page 1 is two pics, side by
side, one with black sills , the other painted body colour (yellow). On
page 5 is some pics (not very good ones) of my old silver car which also
had painted sills.

I think the main thing is that you need a deeper front bumper, or a
factory lower lip to go with painted sills, other wise the car starts to
look too fat in the middle.

F U S H I A pink thank you !!!
I will send you some before and after photos.
I would be interested in meeting the person who painted it F - - - Pink,
luckily the inside ofthe engine well and boot were left the original red
which made it easy to change back.
