While washing the MX5 over the weekend,I noticed that the GRP nosecone is
starting to fade a bit relative, to the rest of the car. The car is red,
perhaps the worst colour for fade
I thought I might attack it with some "colour restoring" polish, but before I
do, does anyone have a better idea?

Read the sub forum devoted to paint care etc on miata.net I didn't know you
could spend a whole weekend devoted to just washing, polishing and detailing
your mx5.

Red maybe be the worst for fading but at least it's not GREEN, you'd have to
hope it would fade (away) then...
ha ha ha ha...
But seriously what's GRP (Green Really Puke???) I've noticed a few red MX5's
have the fade issue, it's a bummer. There are two possibilities that pop to
mind (both guess work) firstly the most likely part to be touched up by the
dealer upon arrival to NZ are the bumpers and they would most likely done a
cheaper job using maybe acrylics rather than two-pack, thus you see a lot of
imports where the clear coat is falling off. Second possibility is that when
using two pack paints they have to add a flexative agent into the clear to
reduce cracking, this may also reduce the UV protection. I've had a few bit's
repainted on my new baby and it was a lot cheaper than I thought. Worth a shop
round, and if they haven't got a spray booth don't even bother.

I'm pretty sure GRP = Glass Reinforced Plastic
TG Sports, classic roadster - modern technology. NA1800, 99 head, 11:1 +2mm Wiseco pistons, Link LEM, Alloy f/wheel, JR headers.

Well done that man! GRP does mean Glass Reinforced Plastic, some times called
FRP or Fibre Reinforced Plastic, or simply "Fibreglass"
You have to admit that GRP is quicker to type!
Thanks to all who made suggestions, I'll let you know how I get on

Of course, I'd point out that neither the front bumper, rear bumper, or rear
"dress panel" (otherwise known as the pane between the rear lights with your
number plate) are actually made of GRP/FRP... unless they are aftermarket
items... The factory hard-top might be though?
The factory bumpers are polythene...( I believe?) which is why they are soft
and rubbery... rather than hard and crunchy like fibreglass... They are
actually white under the paint!
Fletch.
