Roofless racing

Post by Colin » Wed Aug 04, 2004 3:54 pm

Hi,

Its a bit of a shame that someone had to come all the way from Auckland to a
real racetrack at Manfield, only to be turned away. It sounds like a bit of
muddled communication. I have a friend who works for Motorsport NZ and during
a chat earlier today I asked him to clarify the regulations. Below is his
response. I don't know what the 'event' at Manfield was designated as. Hope
this helps. Please don't inundate him too much with mail, the website has all
the regs.

Cheers

Open Cars, and permitted events.

As per our conversation earlier today, the only events that an Open Car (which
means any car not having a permanent solid structure from the windscreen
running over the occupants to the rear of the vehicle - so clipping on a hard
top isn't going to help you) may compete in without HOMOLOGATED Roll
Protection (either half, or full cage) are:

Motorkhana's
Autocross's
Standing 400m sprints (but not flying 400m)

Also, it is worth noting that an organiser even for the above three types of
event may in fact in their regs specifically state that all open cars must
have roll protection, which would exclude cars without homologated roll
protection. If a venue was deemed too dangerous by the organisers, they may
choose to exclude non-caged open cars.

I use the word Homologated a lot, because if a roll protection structure does
not have MotorSport NZ Homologation, then it may not be used. eg: the double
chrome heated towel rails that a lot of MX5's have screwed onto the rear
parcel shelf.

Cheers

double chrome heated towel rails

Maybe I should try wiring my bars up and plug them into the cigarette
lighter ;-)

"double chrome heated towel rails"
Seems to be a problem with the chrome I believe, therefore our treble
polished stainless units should be a shoo in!
Bah humbug!. Cages are for feeding sharks in at Kaikoura.
