He1p please - I want to take my MX5 to Australia

Post by Char Moase » Tue Jun 29, 2004 1:54 pm

Hi there Im moving to Australia and would like to take my MX5 with me.
Its a 1989 and the importing rules are easier for cars aged 15 years and
older. My problem is that while I know that the car was manufactured in
1989, I dont know what month as its a Japanese import. Does anyone know
if the manufacture date is on the car somewhere or if there is another way I
can find out? Help, help, help!!! Thanks, Char camoase@hotmail.com

I can't help on telling the date of manufacture, however please make sure
you have all the necessary paperwork in order before the car leaves NZ. My
cousin has a car that is still sitting on the docks in Sydney after 2 years
because one item hadn't been completed before his car left. And this is
despite having owned the car for more than 12 months.

If you have owned the car in NZ for more than 12 months and are yourself
moving to Australia to live you are essentialy exempt from any of their
rediculous import rules when taking a vehicle you already own with you.

When my wife and I looked at migrating to Oz about 5 years ago we wanted to
take our pristine 1964 Mini. There did not seem to be too much to importing
it since we had owned it a while, (I had it from new, my first car, and, no,
sorry, I have since sold it). I think we had to keep it for a period once we
got it there or we would have been stung taxes and duties

It has to do with the category of vehicle, from memory, but the guys at
Aussie Customs were really helpful, a phone call to Oz could be a good
investment.

They have some tough rules on vehicles exported ex Japan, so you might need
to be very clear on that before you get it there.
