I am looking at installation of White dial faces on my 96 MX 5.
I have been quoted $250 inc GST from Parrats in town here for installation
only. As MXMart quote it only takes 2 hours and can be done for $60 does
anybody know any small size instrument firms that might be sensible about their
charges ?

Col if you are even moderately handy with wielding a screwdriver there is a really good set of instructions I found on the MX website when I did this swap over four/five years ago. The whole exercise took me 3 hours start to finish (had no previous experience in it). It is not a difficult proposition by any means and does not require any specialist tools. Just a couple of screwdrivers and plenty of patience. Main problem I encountered was changing the colour of the needles - white on white isn't the best. I just scraped off the white and replaced on the underside with a vivid marker in red. One of the other tricks is to ensure you carefully record the dial settings for temperature, oil pressure etc. I managed to "lose" a couple of pounds oil pressure and "lower" the engine temps by a couple of degrees when refitting needles just ever so slightly off mark.

The problem I have seen with home made white face gauge replacements, is the
light dissipation at night. Most are shocking.

A friend of mine bought some EL Glow gauges for about $10. They were
American and in MPH. He simply ripped off the printing from the EL ( electro
luminescence ) sheet, printed a new one and stuck it back on. This is the
best installation I have ever seen. EL is a thin sheet of plastic that glows
when you apply a current. A pot will allow you to control the brightness.
Some even allow you to change colour.

The faces are obtainable here in NZ for 150 bucks + GST. Unfortunately the
Yankee ones are in MPH and not KPH.

Thanks for that Robin. i am too old and cranky to waste 5 hours (which it would
take me I guess ) . I am looking for someone to do it for me at a reasonable
charge for cash.
