Muffler relocation

Post by Colin Francis » Tue Apr 27, 2004 10:38 am

Has anyone had a recent Muffler relocation done to accomodate the spare wheel
under the MX5.
I am interested in finding out the brand of muffler used and the final noise
factor.
Also can anyone in Ch-Ch reccommend a muffler shop that has actually carried out
the work ?

Muffler relocation

Hi Colin, Don at Autoway.services@xtra.co.nz (club sponsor) has done
several conversions and has all the parts available. I know its a long way
from Hamilton to ChCh but Don is worth ringing (07 847 5484)or emailing for
info and help.

Muffler relocation

Hi colin,

Had mine done yesterday -- recent enough? -- by Woolf Mufflers in Auckland.
And while the price was a bit steeper than I had anticipated at
$442+gst, I am very happy with the resulting discretely low but
appropriate sporty rumble.
They used *two* Bullet 54mm expansion chambers (resonators) and muffler
described on my bill as Oval 51mm C/C 14" x 8" x 4" (no brand name).

Seems that with the necessarily smaller muffler, the doubling-up on the
resonators is necessary if you don't want it too loud and 'blatty'.
Works well in my case.

Muffler relocation

Hi Colin, Have just had the relocation done by Pit Stop in Tauranga, they
had done one previously. I followed the instructions I found on the MX5
website, and they fitted a slightly different muffler. It's a Lukey Turbo
Oval OO 51MM, offset outlet both ends, fitted quite easily, its a bit
louder than it was previously but is still fine. I had to remove the rhs
tow/tie down hook to stop it rattling. I've now discovered its quite awkward
to get the spare on and off the threaded bar while the car is on the ground,
easy enough while its up on the hoist. I'm looking at adapting a hinged
cradle type arrangement similar to those you find on vans. Vince.

Similar experience here for me in the Manawatu - Pit Stop again. RPS round turbo muffler. Not sure I like the angle of the outlet but I'll live with it. Yes it is louder but more poke and lower centre of gravity. Spare wheel on threaded rod - hope I don't have to use it too often! When I went for my warrant they want an R-clip through the rod in case the wheel came loose (hasn't shown any sign of it for months...)

Good luck but dunno what to do with the space now...CD changer maybe?
