I sympathise entirely, being a bit long in the leg I have the same problem. I
took the easy way and have the MX5 Key on a separate MX5 keying, can't off
hand think of another solution

Irritating keys
As a thought...
We could design some right leg thigh pads which would cover just the area
where the keys rub. These would be in the shape of MX5 lettering so that, when
you were wearing shorts, your legs would tan around the 'MX5' and you would be
instantly recognisable as a Club member by the shaped white patch even when
your car was totally out of sight.
This would lead to the interesting spectacle of MX5-ers waving to each other
on the pavement and across crowded rooms as well as on the road...

I have my MX5 key on a separate ring from the house keys, but with a little
spring clip to keep them together when not in use.
As a less serious solution, SAAB (in the days before they started glueing
badges onto WRXs and Chevy SUVs) used to have the ignition lock on the center
console, so you didn't mutilate yourself on the keys in a crash. Perhaps you
could move the ignition lock to the center console, and put a starter button
where the ignition lock used to be. Not sure what you could do about the
steering lock though...

Irritating keys
Does anyone know of any case at all where a car thief has been deterred by a
steering lock...?
Which brings to mind a tale which I trust our moderator will forgive me
telling since it involves no MX5 but, after all, it is a holiday weekend
approaching and it would be nice to restore good humour to the list...
My brother, who lives in Glasgow, swears that this is true and he knows the
lady concerned. She was a prison visitor at the time going into places such as
the infamous Barlinnie Jail to talk to and help reform assorted villains. On
one occasion, she returned to her car to realise that she had inadvertently
locked herself out with the keys still in the ignition. She called a nearby
warder to assist her.
'No problem,' said the warder confidently. 'Right,' he shouted to a group of
the surrounding inmates, 'which of youse is in for Taking Without Consent?'
(ie stealing a motor vehicle). A number of hands were raised. 'You,' the
warder cried, picking a face at random, 'Break intae this lady's car!'
'Whit?' said the prisoner. 'Go on, said the warder, 'Show us how ye dae it -
break intae this lady's car.'
'OK said the bemused prisoner. And, picking up a convenient half brick from a
pile of rubble, he threw it through the drivers' window...

What you need is a starter button!
Seriously though, Morven's car got stolen last year so I know for a fact
that the steering lock is completely useless as a theft deterrent. I'm
thinking of getting rid of the ignition barrel altogether. An alarm with
two stage immobiliser and a starter button should do a better job.
So it would look cooler, be more fun and be safer, what am I waiting for?
Cheers
